C-117 R4D-6 Douglas DC3, 150187
The Incident:
25. July 1969, the Douglas R4D-6 C/N 20842 of the US Air Force was damaged beyond economic repair during Take Off at the old Thórshöfn Airport in the north east of Iceland. It was written off by the Navy and left to its devices in grass closure not far from the airstrip at Sauðanes north of Thórshöfn. For years the farmer at Sauðanes used the wreck as a shelter for his sheep and in 1969 its wings were removed. Supposedly the plane was to be restored but something must have upset those plans. Unlike the Douglas at Sólheimasandur it still has some colour but otherwise in no better condition.
The Crew:
Pilot Russel W. Sims Jr. and Co Pilot Daniel A. Blacker survived.
