The Incident:
Capt. Mourne, Mark J was on patrol flight south of Iceland. His engine failed and he bailed out at ca 1700‘ The aircraft hit the North slope of mountain Helgafell on Vestmannaeyjum and was completely destroyed. The pilot drifted in the parachute to the West side of Hamarinn and landed in the sea not far from the shore. Golfers on close by golf course witnessed the action and helped the pilot to the shore.
