The Incidents:
July 2, 1940
Supermarine Walrus Mk I was forced to land close to the mouth of the river Þjórsá due to engine failure. The engine was repaired and the aircraft flew to Skerjafjörður.
July 5, 1940
Supermarine Walrus Mk I c/n P5717 was damaged when taxiing to the moorings in Skerjaförður and struck an unchartered rock resulting in damage to the hull and the landing gear.
July 6, 1940
Supermarine Walrus Mk I was damaged when taxiing to the moorings at Skerjaförður.
August 4, 1940
Supermarine Walrus Mk I, forced landing on sea east of Papey due to engine failure.
The aircraft was badly damaged when beeing towed to Reyðarfjörður.
No. 701 Naval Air Squadron was based in Skerjaförður (Reykjavík) from late June 1940 to October 1940. The Squadron operated eight Walrus Aircraft during the stay in Iceland. Three aircraft operated from the base at Skerjaförður. Detachment at Akureyri operated two aircraft. Detachment at Búðareyri operated three aircraft. The aircraft arrived on HMS Argus. The Squadron had several mishaps during the period in Iceland.
